The Meaning of Metaphor by Alexander Schopenhauer

The Accidental Universe is a memoir by Alan Lightman, a successful neurosurgeon. The book is a compelling, life-affirming read about his journey through lung cancer. One of the most powerful passages was the author’s description of the world of erratic cause-and-effect and equations, and how his illness has led him to seek out new ways to explain the universe and human experience.

When I was in my first grade class, I was sitting in the back of the room, listening to the teacher reading Chicken Little. The newspaper she was holding was propped up against the glass and positioned on the floor so that the students could see it clearly. Although the teacher was trying to read the book, I was distracted by other things going on around me. I kept thinking, ‘Why am I doing this?’ It’s not fair to me!
